How to thaw frozen drain pipes underground.

The task of thawing a frozen drain pipe begins with planning.  Your drain pipe is connected to the main sewer pipe.

The first step is to decide where you can easily access any portion of the sewer pipe to pour Liqui-Fire Pipe Thaw into the pipe.

There are a few locations available in most dwellings, homes, and buildings.

Some people will pour Liqui-Fire Pipe Thaw into the stink pipe on the roof. Others will pour it into a cheater vent if there is one. These two locations do not have a trap so there will be no need to use a plunger.

If you are going to use other locations then these are ( in order of easy access ) the bathroom sink, a kitchen sink, and a toilet. Some may want to use Liqui-Fire Pipe Thaw in a bathtub or shower floor drain but they are the least preferred drains to use.

Both a bathtub and a shower have a drain but both of these could be permanently stained by residues that may be contained inside of the drain pipe itself if a drain opener or drain cleaner has ever been used to clear a clogged drain.  If you decide to use the drain pipe of either a bathtub or a shower the it is recommended that you do it in the following manner.

You should coat the surface area around the drain with some Vaseline.  This will accomplish two things.

First; it will act as a temporarily surface coating which will prevent the possibility of surface staining.

Secondly; the Vaseline will act as a gasket seal when you insert a funnel into your drain.

Pour Liqui-Fire Pipe Thaw into the funnel and not directly into the drain pipe itself.  You should have no surface staining when properly used as directed.

Most sink drains have a vertical length between the top of the drain and the point where the drain pipe begins to run nearly horizontally.  Bathtub and shower drains have a much shorter vertical length of pipe between the bathtub drain and the near horizontal length of the drain pipe below.

Therefore you are able to pour in more Liqui-Fire Pipe Thaw into the longer vertical length of pipe in a bathroom sink or a kitchen sink drain pipe.

Most people will find a bathroom sink is easily accessible. It also happens to be the smallest drain pipe. This means that the trap beneath most bathroom sinks hold a lesser amount of water in it then a kitchen sink trap.  Once you have poured Liqui-Fire Pipe Thaw into a drain remember to push Liqui-Fire Pipe Thaw beyond the trap itself so that it has entered the drain pipe below.  A common household plunger works well to accomplish this.

A caution to people who use DRAIN  OPENERS or DRAIN  CLEANERS:

Drain opener residue or drain cleaner residue is still strong enough to cause corrosive damage to these surfaces.

Use caution and safety if you believe these products have been used in a drain pipe.

So...

To begin here are the required steps:

1 - Shake Liqui-Fire Pipe Thaw vigorously as you would a can of paint.

2 - Whenever possible (but not necessary), remove safety seal and safely warm Liqui-Fire Pipe Thaw prior to using. ( hot, not boiling ) For your safety, use a pair of kitchen oven mitts or an equivalent hand protection when handling hot materials.

3 - Pour Liqui-Fire Pipe Thaw into the bathroom sink.

4 - Use a plunger to force Liqui-Fire Pipe Thaw beyond the trap. Liqui-Fire Pipe Thaw will not thaw your frozen drain if it is sitting in the trap instead of beyond the trap and in the frozen pipe it is intended to thaw.

5 - Repeat in 4 hours if necessary. It is recommended to have an additional Liqui-Fire Pipe Thaw on hand until the pipe is thawed. Remember that Liqui-Fire Pipe Thaw is weakened slightly when it mixes with the additional standing waste water.

6 - In most sewer environments the sewer pipe will completely empty without any notice once the ice blockage has been thawed.
